The North West zone is situated on the Country of the Kalkadoon, Wunumara and Mayi-Thakurti peoples. The zone includes Cloncurry and Mt Isa.
Women started playing football in North West Queensland during the 1960s
The earliest evidence we can find of a women’s competition in Mount Isa appears in the early 1960s. By 1976, Women Soccer Queensland estimate that as many as 100 players were registered in Mt Isa and 8 teams playing in the competition. Lynn Carey, who played during this time, distinctly remembers playing in the suffocating heat on terrible, rock hard pitches full of pot holes.
In 1980, the women’s State Championships were held in Mt Isa. However, when economic and industrial changes saw drastic changes to the town’s population, women’s football dropped off.
It picked back up again in the 1990s. In 1993, after 10 years of being unable to participate in the State Championships Mount Isa managed to enter a team into the competition.
Current clubs which field women’s teams are Parkside, Tigers, Isaroos and Bulls.
