1950s

Consecutive wins for Bundaberg

In the 1950s Bundaberg and Maryborough continued to play intercity matches. One such intercity tournament was the Buxton Cup, which had started in the late 1940s.

Mark Pringle describes a turning point for Bundaberg in the Buxton Cup:

"The 1954 and 7th Buxton Cup was hosted by Bundaberg. Mackay entered the 1954 competition having won every Buxton Cup since its inception in 1948. In 1954 Bundaberg won their first ever Buxton Cup over Rockhampton (runners-up) and Mackay. Maryborough didn’t compete after pulling out of the competition and subsequently being fined. The player of the tournament was Bob Bernard of Bundaberg who played the tournament with a broken arm in plaster."

Bundaberg went on to win the 1955 and 1956 Buxton cup as well.
