Football Queensland, as part of its strategic commitment to celebrate and embrace the game’s remarkable history, hosts the site as a landmark meeting point between two dynamic projects.
One, the Queensland Football History Project, is chaired and led by Simon Boegheim.
Simon has gathered stories, materials and resources for almost a decade. He has been a force in Queensland football, its development and now its history for over 60 years. He currently works with Centenary Stormers FC, a community club based in Darra, Brisbane.
The second is the women’s football history project, initiated by Lee McGowan.
Lee is a researcher at the University of the Sunshine Coast who began investigating the game in Brisbane before developing a state-wide project with Freya Wright-Brough, a researcher at Queensland University of Technology.
Much of the Queensland Men’s Football history, particularly for the period from the 1880s to the 1960s as captured on this site, is the result of the hard work and efforts of Peter Eedy. Football Queensland History is very grateful.
All four, together with Football Queensland, have given their knowledge, skills, connections and time to bring Football Queensland History to life.
LEE MCGOWAN:
Lee researches football. Alongside developing this project, he published the book Football Fiction: A History (2019) and co-authored Never Say Die: the Hundred-Year Overnight Success of Australian Women’s Football (2019). He is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at the University of the Sunshine Coast and follows Glasgow Celtic, Scotland, the Brisbane Roar (W-League) and the Matildas.
FREYA WRIGHT-BROUGH:
Freya is a researcher at the Queensland University of Technology. She first started working with Lee on the history of Queensland women’s football in 2019. As well as designing and constructing the Digital Museum, Freya has made a number of new and important discoveries in the history of the game.
SIMON BOEGHEIM:
Simon is more than the Chair of the Queensland Football History Project, since its inception in 2003, he’s been its midfield engine, gathering football memorabilia, magazines and our memories. He kicked off the project with the plaque at Pineapple Rovers, commemorating the the earliest days of football in our great state. After a long association with Queensland Lions, Simon is the secretary at Centenary Stormers FC, a community club based in Darra, Brisbane. His enthusiasm has been instrumental in establishing the Digital Museum.
PETER EEDY:
Peter would never tell you this himself, but he is the foremost authority on the historical development of football in Brisbane. His expansive knowledge of the city’s history coupled with his detailed knowledge of the code’s early days and its players is unmatched. His knowledge has been instrumental in establishing the Digital Museum.
We acknowledge the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the events presented in this digital history occurred and acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded. We recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their continuing connection to land and waterways as well as their rich history of sports and significant continuing contribution to football.
