G. Wenlock, is one of the game’s earliest superstars. She played in the first public game of football played by women in Australia, in 1921. Ten thousand people attended to watch the Reds vs the Blues. The Blues were captained by Miss G Wenlock. The ‘Gabba’ match was well-received by the crowd and Wenlock’s defensive efforts saved her team-mates from disaster more than once. The Queensland Times described, ‘the skilful treatment of the game by these young ladies’, and noted that their skill was ‘evidence of keen training’ (led in part by Wenlock).
