Football emerged in Rockhampton in the late 19th Century – anecdotal evidence suggest as competition running in 1896.
Football Central Queensland (FCQ) is the largest zone operating under the banner of Football Queensland (FQ) to deliver and govern football and futsal from junior players through to seniors. Gladstone and Rockhampton are the two big population centres and since 2010 FCQ had been working in partnership with Competition Administrators in Biloela, Blackwater, Emerald, Longreach and on the Capricorn Coast.
In the early 1970s the game became extremely popular with thriving competitions emerging in men’s, women’s and junior football.
There are many other football highlights from the region including a rare game game for the representative men’s seniors against English Second Division club Charlton Athletic.
